Friday Night Sew-In

It has been years since I participated in a Friday Night Sew-In, and I thought it was about time I join in again.

My sewing got an early start and I finished free motion quilting the thimbles table runner.

The binding should get finished tonight.

Friday Night Sew-In Results

Last night was a Friday Night Sew-In, it has been a while for me so I was pleased to join in. Thanks to Wendy from Sugarcane Quilts for hosting.

I was joined by Raewyn (Love to Stitch) on her Saturday - quilting and chatting, a nice way to spend an evening!

I didn't get any sewing done, but I cut out all the fabric for a new quilt. Pressing the fat quarters took as long at the cutting! The pattern is Emma by Bella Moon, a great fat quarter pattern. I used the rest of a French General fat quarter pack (leftover from my Double Wedding Ring quilt) for this - 23 FQ's (I am making the quilt 60" x 84", 12" blocks with a 5x7 layout).

I really enjoying this kind of piecing. It is the second time I have made this pattern and it is going together well.

Today I pieced 21 blocks (I need 35 blocks).

The snow drifts in the yard are constantly changing.

The partridges and rabbit eating together.

Friday Night Sew In Results

Another successful Friday Night Sew In!

I machine quilted some hooked feathers for my Mother,

in the border of this little quilt she made.

It is a thimble quilt - the pieces are about an 1". She had stippled the centre, but didn't feel up to feathers yet.

I had to keep a timer near by so that I wouldn't get carried away with sewing,

and forget to move the sprinkler. We are trying to grow grass and sod in +30C temperatures, and it takes a lot of water.

I did sew together some hour glass blocks too (I had made the blocks a while ago).

They are for the sashing of the Hop to It quilt (from the book by Edyta Sitar, I finished the last block this week).

I didn't know if I would like the sashing, but I now think it will be OK.

Friday Night Sew In Results

I had a great Friday night!

Skypeing and sewing with friends - Joan (at Leschenault) and Raewyn (lovetostitch).

I had a little buddy to keep me company too (we are looking after a friends dog for three weeks).

My Friday night started with some chores - surprisingly my fancy iron does more than just quilting projects!

My main Friday night project was working on this mini quilt (it is the March small quilt for the Yahoo Small Quilt Talk Group). I added the borders last night and got started on the machine quilting. I stitched in the ditch with the walking foot first and then did some free motion quilting. I should get the quilt finished this weekend.

Friday Night Sew In Results

I had a lovely Friday Night Sew In - sewing and Skype-ing with friends, Raewyn (lovetostitch) and Joan (at Leschenault) - it was their Saturday since they are in New Zealand and Australia (love the internet!).

I am almost half way through quilting the string quilt.

I chose an easy design of swirls on the trellis and meander for the blocks.

Friday Night Sew In Tonight

Tonight is the Friday Night Sew In, and I am all ready.

I pinned this string quilt today. I am trying silk batting for the first time. It is lovely and thin, and is supposed to be breathable and wonderful for a summer weight quilt.

Friday Night Sew In Results

For the Friday Night Sew In I started making a fabric bowl.

the base is 9" and I started the sides

 When starting the sides I found that I really had to hold the bowl up, and press it up underneath, close to the presser foot, otherwise the base was just bending.

I started with 50' of cotton cord (it is 1/4" and sold as clothesline cord) from the hardware store. I have had the beautiful fabric for a couple of years and never knew what to make with it, I thought this would be a perfect application since the colours are so wonderful (and I have nothing to go with it).

I cut 1" strips of fabric across the width, and pressed 1/4" over along the edge. I used this method with the pin in the ironing board. It worked wonderfully (once I realized I could keep the little legs on the Oliso iron from coming out), I just set the iron down on the strip and pulled the strip through. It took just seconds to press each strip. I chose to fold down an edge of the fabric so that the bowl wouldn't be "hairy" with little threads.

I then wrapped some cord, it overlaps about half of the strip. I only wrapped one strip of fabric at a time and then sewed.

I do have this very handy double cording foot for my machine which is very helpful. I used the Triple Zig Zag stitch, set quite wide.

I started the bowl last night, worked on it some more this morning and have quite a bit more to go!
The inspiration for the bowl is from here (I probably will add handles too). I have used 17 WOF strips so far. I probably should have attempted a smaller bowl first!

I did manage to get another row added to the Winding Ways quilt yesterday too, more than a quarter of the quilt now.

Friday Night Sew In

Tonight is the Friday Night Sew In hosted by Heidi and Bobbi.

I am attempting my first fabric bowl! We'll see how far I get.

Usually I volunteer one afternoon a week at a school library, but this week it was the spring book fair, and I was there for three full days. Such fun! And so wonderful to see all the children - lots I have known since they were in Kindergarten. The theme this year was "A Book Luau". Notice the "quilted" signs on the walls made with book jackets - guess who made those!

We have been having fabulous weather (supposed to be 24C on Sunday) and my oldest was thrilled to be able to take out his motorcycle for the first time this year (about a month earlier than previous years).

Friday Night Sew In Results

Yesterday I finished the background filler on three of the quilt blocks (17" blocks) of the Granny's Hankie quilt.

The block's backgrounds are now finished. I will add some details to the blocks later.

 I also marked circles in the little black border.

I plan on quilting a meandering feather in the black part of this border, with some filler stitching in the red.
Then I have to decide how to quilt the outer border, the little yellow border and the sashing.

I also did some knitting last knit.

Friday Night

Tonight is the Friday Night Sew In and I have been quilting the Granny's Hankie Quilt, and also doing some knitting.

My sister finished her mug rug (from the appliqué class). She is a beginner machine quilter  and she did a great job!

The partridges are in the yard many times during the day. I assume we always see the same flock, there used to be 13 and now there are only 11 (one is not in the picture).

We recently had snow and all the little tracks are from the partridges - they sure walk a lot.

Friday Night Sew In Results

My Friday Night Sew In had an early start -

with Joan in Australia - Friday night there. Seeing her in her tank top made me forget how cold it is here!

I started sewing Winding Ways blocks - I cut enough for a large quilt. I am sewing the blocks together as I go. These are ~8" blocks, and I need to make 144 of them - 12 made yesterday.

I also did some knitting - heart socks in red wool!
