Block 4 THQA 2012

This week we are making a Bear's Paw block.

For this 7" block you will need -

Print A (mine is the orange dots) -

8 - 2" squares, for the Half Square Triangles (HST)
                                            EQ calls for 1+7/8" squares,
but if  you make the "Easy HST", 2" is easier to cut
4 - 1+1/2" squares, for the corners of the block
                       4 - 1+1/2" x 3+1/2" rectangles, for the centre cross

Print B (mine is the green print) -

8 - 2" squares, for the Half Square Triangles (HST)
                                            EQ calls for 1+7/8" squares,
but if  you make the "Easy HST", 2" is easier to cut
                          1 - 1+1/2" square, for the centre

Print C (mine is the red print) -

                         4 - 2+1/2" squares

Start by making the HST's (all the instructions are shown here) with the Print A and B 2" squares.

Trim these 16 HST to 1+1/2" squares.

Make four "Bear Paw" units with four HST's, a Print C square and a Print A 1+1/2"  square.

Sew two HST's and the 1+1/2" square into a row, and two HST's into another row,

stitch the two HST's to the large square, notice how the seams are pressed in the above photo, this helps to see where to sew so that the points of the HST aren't cut off.

add the two HST's, and the small square to the larger unit,

notice how the seams are pressed in the above photo,

this keeps the points of the triangles, and makes the corner seams meet at the right place (life is short and this is not important to everyone - these are just tips if it is important to you).

The four units should be 3+1/2" square, trim if needed.

All the units, the four Print A rectangles, and the small Print B square will be joined together like a regular Nine-Patch.

Sew the pieces into rows,

pressing the seam allowances in opposite directions,

Sew the rows together. Trim the block to 7+1/2".

Here are my other two blocks -

All three blocks together -

All the blocks I have made so far -

it is coming along!

I admit that this block had lots of trimming with all the HST's, so next week the block will be much simpler.

Have a great day and thanks for quilting along!
